Alchemy and Ilkley Literature Festival Present: The Language of Saris
Tuesday 17 November 2015, 6pm, Round Foundry Media Centre
Suffusing a grey November evening with gorgeous colours, textures and motifs, this salon event has been inspired by the varied sari traditions of India.
Indian textiles have been traded across the world for over 2,000 years. The astonishing diversity of design vocabularies and techniques make them a source of continuing wonder and admiration. The wealth of motifs and sumptuous colour palette are matched by a range of sophisticated techniques, often underpinned by the simplest of technologies.
This event includes a vibrant sari display from the different regions of India and a talk exploring the symbolism of saris by Dr.Nima Poovaya-Smith. Dancer Rashmi Sudhir will enact Sringara through depicting the ritual of adornment and poet John Siddique will read his Allegories of Power poems written in response to Indian textiles.
