Book Now for Salley Vickers and Rachel Reeves
We hope you have all had a wonderful start to 2019.
Planning for the main Festival and Words in the City is already well underway and we are delighted to announce our first events of 2019:
Salley Vickers – The Librarian
Salley Vickers returns to Ilkley with her latest subtle, witty observation of human nature: The Librarian. Sylvia Blackwell takes a job as a children’s librarian in a quaint market town, but her relationship with an older man, his precocious daughter and her neighbours’ son put the library and her new life under threat. Are the library and the books she suggests altering children’s lives?
Fri 8 Mar, 7.30pm, Christchurch on the Grove, £8/6 concessions*
Rachel Reeves MP – Women of Westminster: The MPs Who Changed Politics
In the past 100 years, a total of 489 women have been elected to Parliament. Yet it was not until 2015 that the total number of women ever elected surpassed the number of male MPs in a single parliament. The achievements of these political pioneers have been remarkable – Britain has now had two female Prime Ministers and women MPs have made significant strides in fighting for gender equality from the earliest suffrage campaigns to Barbara Castle’s fight for equal pay to Harriet Harman’s recent legislation on the gender pay gap. Yet the stories of so many women MPs have too often been overlooked in political histories. Rachel Reeves (MP for Leeds West since 2010) brings many forgotten MPs out of the shadows and looks at the many battles fought by the Women of Westminster, from 1919 to 2019.
Fri 5 Apr, 7.30pm, Christchurch on the Grove, £8/6 concessions*
